"There is a massive difference between ego and self-respect that one must know. A positive sense of self have a good impact, but excess of everything is harmful, this positive sense when exceeds then makes a person self-centered and egotistical."

Mullah nazaruddin told his guru 'I often get drunk being in bad company. The sad part is that they are all your students who are not practising what you have taught.'
'What did they not practise?' asked the guru. 'You have taught your students the value of sharing. When I brought alcohol, none of them shared with me and I had to drink alone' cried Mullah Nazaruddin.

Ego has it's justifying logic. The logic of the ego is crippling; not freeing. Religion should free us. In the name of religion people are crippled. The true quality of religion is to free oneself.
Once we are egoless, the joy opens up spontaneously. 'Egolessness' awakens intelligence whereas ego gathers knowledge.
